Metropolitan Learning Institute
On the 8th floor, at the corner of 82nd Street and 37th Avenue operates the Metropolitan Learning Institute, a non-profit organization whose goal is to train adults for the professional world. All of their students are admitted through scholarships provided by the government, with the requirement of having finished High School and hold a permanent resident status or citizenship. The program is 15 months long, it begins with English classes, then computer training, and finally the opportunity of choosing between special training programs like bookkeeping, computer office technology, and medical billing that the student completes after 1,500 hours of training in total. The commercial nature of Jackson Heights, make bookkeeping the first choice among the students.
Metropolitan Learning Institute not only offers training, but also career support along the process, since their team is aware of all the possible obstacles that in most cases hold students back from starting or completing the program, such as the lack of a high school degree. “Many people in this area come into the country at a very young age without having finished high school, and when they get here they work, so when they finally show interest in studying and aim to apply for financial aid, this becomes an obstacle, ”explains Henry Torres, member of the administrative staff. This is not the only challenge that our community —predominantly immigrant— has to face. That is the reason why their career support becomes fundamental. The team plays an important role motivating students to feel comfortable with their language skills. Besides, once they finish the required courses each student receives job counseling and meets an employment agent, in order to secure available positions.
“I graduated in 2010,” tells Gina Yanez, who is now part of the supporting staff at the institute. After completing the program, she entered college, where she realized that her training at the institute made her stand out among her classmates. “I attended high school in my country, but some of my classmates having studied here, wouldn’t reach the level that I was when I entered college,” concludes Gina.
Currently, they serve around 200 students and count with almost 20 instructors. They host a wide range of ages from 18 to 55 years old, and an array of nationalities. The goal that the Metropolitan Learning Institute aims to reach is to motivate people to think about their education and maximize their possibilities in the professional world.

En el octavo piso de la esquina de la calle 82 y la avenida 37 se encuentra el Metropolitan Learning Institute, una organización sin ánimo de lucro que se dedica a preparar adultos para el mundo laboral. Todos sus estudiantes son admitidos a través de becas que el gobierno provee, para la que se debe cumplir el requisito de haber terminado el bachillerato y tener el estado de residente o ciudadano. El programa dura 15 meses y empieza con clases de inglés, luego preparación en computación y por último la oportunidad de elegir entre carreras cortas como contabilidad, informática y facturación médica, que se completan después de 1500 horas de entrenamiento en total. La naturaleza comercial del área de Jackson Heights, hacen de la carrera de contabilidad la elección número uno entre los estudiantes.
Metropolitan Learning Institute no sólo ofrece la formación, sino además un acompañamiento durante todo el proceso, ya que el equipo conoce los obstáculos comunes de los estudiantes que en muchos casos impiden que éstos comiencen o completen el programa, como la falta de un diploma de bachillerato. “Muchas personas en esta área vienen de edad muy joven y no terminan la secundaria, y cuando llegan a este país se dedican a trabajar, entonces cuando al fin muestran interés por estudiar y quieren aplicar a estas ayudas, se ven con esta barrera”, explica Henry Torres, miembro administrativo del instituto. No siendo este el único obstáculo que presenta nuestra comunidad, que es en su mayoría de inmigrantes. Es por esto que el acompañamiento es fundamental. El equipo juega un papel importante al motivar a sus estudiantes a ganar confianza con el idioma. Además, al terminar los cursos requeridos, cada estudiante recibe el acompañamiento de un entrenador laboral y agente de empleos, para además asegurarse de ubicarlos en oportunidades disponibles.
“Yo me gradué en el 2010”, cuenta Gina Yanez, quien ahora es parte del equipo de acompañamiento del instituto. Después de terminar el programa, entró a la universidad en donde se dio cuenta de que esta preparación la destacaba entre sus compañeros. “Yo hice la secundaria en mi país, pero algunos de mis compañeros, habiendo estudiado aquí, aún no alcanzaban el nivel en el que yo estaba cuando entré a la universidad”, comenta Gina.
Actualmente, cuentan con alrededor de 200 estudiantes y cerca de 20 instructores. Cuentan con una variedad de edades que están entre los 18 y los 55 años, y una gran diversidad de nacionalidades. El objetivo por el que, finalmente, trabaja el Metropolitan Learning Institute es el de motivar a las personas a pensar en su educación y maximizar sus posibilidades en el campo laboral.
